Position of Kololo Game Reserve, Waterberg

Kololo, a malaria-free nature reserve in Waterberg, Limpopo, South Africa has an abundance of resident game in a great diversity of habitats.

Guests can watch Big Five game roaming on the adjacent reserve. Kololo has an extensive list of wildlife excursions, safaris and tours which take place nearby or within a 2 hour radius.

Flora and fauna

This pristine Nature Reserve in Waterberg, Limpopo, South Africa spreads over 3 000 hectares in an area of great geographical wonder. The terrain consists of thick bushveld, open savannah grass plains, mountains and valleys.

A variety of game can be seen including

Impala, Kudu, Rooi Hartebeest, Blue Wildebeest, Zebra, Eland, Nyala, Waterbuck, Giraffe, Blesbuck and Bushbuck, also smaller species such as Duiker, Mountain Reedbuck, Klipspringer, Steenbok, Bushpig and Warthog.

The birds and the bees

There are over 300 species of birdlife in the reserve which are indigenous to the area. Kololo and the surroundings support around 84 different species of trees, many are marked along the walking and bike trails. Wild flowers and grasses change with the seasons. There are about 500 species of plant on the Waterberg plateau.

Plant a tree

Kololo offers individuals and companies the opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint by choosing a tree and the perfect spot where it will be planted. A plaque with the donor name and tree description will be put next to the tree. For every donor tree, Kololo will match it with another.

Social responsibility

Kololo Game Reserve actively supports the local community in a variety of ways through various programmes such as education, raising funds and welfare assistance.

Directions to Kololo Game Reserve

A charter flight service as well as a transfer bus service from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg (ORTIA) is offered to guests. Many visitors opt to fly in on the charter flight and then take the scenic road transfer back to the airport, once they are rested and relaxed.

Air charter

Guests are collected at ORTIA and taken to Wonderboom airfield in Pretoria (approximately 40 minutes), where they are flown in either a 6 seater Seneca, 8 seater Chieftain or a 14 seater Caravan. This is a 45 minute flight over the picturesque Waterberg mountain range to Kololo Game Reserve.

Self-drive option

From ORTIA, take the R21 north to Pretoria (Tswane). Closer to Pretoria turn off from the R21 onto the N1 and continue north past Pretoria in the direction of Pietersburg (Polokwane). Turn left on the R33 to Modimolle at the Kranskop toll gate. Go through Modimolle and through Vaalwater (Mabatlane). DO NOT turn right on R33 to Ellisras in Vaalwater.

Continue straight to Bulgeriver / Thabazimbi and 8km (5 miles) after Vaalwater turn left on the Bakkerspas Road (there is a sign to Kololo). Drive 29km (18 miles) on a dirt road and find Kololo's gate on your right. Total distance from the airport to Kololo: about 280km (174 miles) or 3 hour's drive.
