The West Coast National Park near Langebaan, Western Cape, South Africa is a 1,5 hours drive north of Cape Town, off the R27 highway. The main areas of interest are the tranquil waters of Langebaan Lagoon, Postberg Flower Reserve and Atlantic coastline. Most internal routes are tarred however the last section of the road to Postberg is gravelled.

Major attractions are the marine and lagoon fauna and flora, fossil deposits, flower displays, wading birds and the use of houseboats. West Coast National Park near Langebaan, Western Cape, South Africa experiences a temperate coastal climate. Rain occurs mainly from May to August. Summers are dry with early morning mists and south-easterly or south-westerly winds.

Wheelchair access

There are a variety of visitor destinations within the park with varying access potential. Geelbek Hide is wheelchair friendly and provides great birding opportunities depending on the tides. Game and flower viewing in Postberg Reserve is done from visitor’s own motor vehicles. The pathway to the lagoon is partially navigable. Toilet facilities are spacious and accessible. Wheelchair users will need assistance to access the lagoon jetties and beaches but the mobile toilet facilities are not accessible.

Directions to West Coast National Park

From Cape Town city centre

Take the N1 (Paarl) on-ramp and pass Lower Church Street off-ramp. Take next the off-ramp - R27 (Marine Drive). Continue through Paarden Eiland and Milnerton. The R27 becomes the West Coast Road. Travel along R27 for ±120km (75 miles) passed Yzerfontein / Darling turn-off (11km / 7 miles). Turn left into West Coast National Park Gate.

From Cape Town International Airport

Drive on the N2 and then take the Goodwood N7 off-ramp. Vanguard Drive travels passed Grand West Casino and becomes N7 (Malmesbury). Continue driving then take the Melkbosstrand turn-off to the left. At the traffic light, turn right onto R27 (Velddrif). Continue passed the Yzerfontein / Darling turn-off (11km / 7 miles) then turn left into West Coast National Park Gate.
