Situated between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, Shongweni Game Reserve is home to a variety of wildlife and bird species and is surrounded by breathtaking mountian views.

Shongweni is situated midway between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. A 30 minute drive from Durban will take you to this 1 700 hectares reserve, which offers fine examples of many habitats including grasslands, valley, bushveld and spectacular cliffs.
The reserve supports a wide variety of wildlife including Rhino, Buffalo, Giraffe, Zebra, Impala, Waterbuck, Kudu, Wildebeest, Caracal, Black backed Jackal, Dassie, Warthog, Ostrich, three Duiker species, Mongoose and the smaller mammals. Shongweni is also rated as one of the top bird sanctuaries with over 200 species recorded, this is due to the excellent variety of habitat types, from water, forest, grassland to classic thorn-veld.
How To Get There: Take the N3 from Durban, past the toll plaza at Mariannhill. Take the Shongweni Assagay off ramp, turn left towards Shongweni then left again at the sign to the dam. Take the first turn to the right along a gravel road for about 4 km to the Shongweni Dam Reserve.
