The reserve offers guided walking trails with an experienced guide and self-guided walking trails. Self-guided nature trails will take you through riverine forests and open grassland, where a variety of antelope species including Zebra, small mammals and an abudance of birdlife can be viewed. Visitors can also enjoy optional game drives in an open 4x4 vehicle, traveling through wilderness areas that are home to Rhino, Zebra and some of the larger antelope.
Bird lovers can enjoy bird watching from idyllic spots where the orange breasted Bush Shrike, Narina Trogon, Redfaced Mousebird can be viewed as well as 4 of the large Eagles species namely the Crowned, Fish, Black and Martial Eagles.
The reserve boasts with 3 picturesque picnic sites as well as self-guided nature trails for day visitors. Self-catering accommodation is also available at Mkangoma camp. Fishing enthusiasts can delight in tranquil hours of fishing at the Shongweni Dam or enjoy sailing and canoeing. Horse riding will take you on an awe-inspiring journey through rugged cliffs, lush forests, open thorn tree plains and majestical waterfalls.
The adventurous guest can enjoy rock climbing at world renowned sites in the Shongweni Game Reserve. Apart from the excellent walls, there are 2 marvellous overhangs namely 'The Wave Cave' and 'The Rasta Cave'. These sites consists of 'the most awe-inspiring piece of rock in Natal' and 'Super steep and immaculately clean rock'.
