The Shongweni Resource Reserve at Shongweni dam, built in 1927, it is the Jewel of the East Coast and the gateway to Durban, a piece of the true Africa.
The reserve is situated 30 minutes away to the spectacular beaches of the South African Indian Ocean coastline. Durban is one of the world's premier coastal resort cities.
The reserve is 17 000 hectares in size and offers fine examples of many habitats including grasslands, valley, bushveld and spectacular cliffs. The reserve is home to 2 of Africa's Big Five including Giraffe, Waterbuck, Warthog, Kudu, Wildebeest and other game.
The wall of the dam is an engineering phenomenon with the largest 'Hydroplus Fuse Gate' system in the world and the original water works are preserved as a national monument.
It is especially rich in birds, with more than 200 recorded species. Game drives, horse rides and canoes are some of the activities offered in the reserve. All the wonderful activities accessible to the residents in the Lodge, including guided walks, game drives, canoeing, horse riding and other activities are available at an additional cost. Shongweni is open to day visitors from 6am-6pm.
