Ai-Ais / Richtersveld Tansfrontier National Park, Northern Cape, South Africa has an extreme desert climate, with scorching hot days and cool nights. Activities should be restricted to early mornings and late afternoons as temperatures of up to 53°C in mid summer can be experienced. Heavy night time dew sometimes occurs in the park.

The Ai-Ais / Richtersveld National Park, a Northern Cape nature reserve in South Africa, is widely reckoned as one of the world’s richest succulent areas. The desert flora is unique in the world for its richness and individuality. Fabulous spring flower viewing can be experienced between June and October if the rains have been good. Numerous animals both large and small can be spotted in the cooler times of the day.

Notes

  • Day visits are not recommended unless some form of accommodation is secured in the area. Due to deep-sanded riverbeds and rough mountain passes, driving in convoy is advised. Single vehicles must sign an agreement to report back to park headquarters on departure
  • The pontoon for vehicles which cross the Orange River is subject to high water levels and may or may not be in service, consult with your friendly Siyabona Travel Consultant
  • Sendelingsdrif – admission and overnight permits are arranged here. Fresh water is available but guests should always carry a good supply. There is a public phone (coin operated) but no cellular communication in the park other than with international roaming (beware the bill). A general store is open during the week and fuel is available everyday
  • Directions to Ai-Ais / Richtersveld Transfrontier National Park

    The quickest way to get to Ai-Ais / Richtersveld Transfrontier National Park, Northern Cape, South Africa from N7 (South Africa) and B1 (Namibia) is to turn off at Steinkopf and approach via Port Nolloth and Alexander Bay with only the last 80km (50 miles) being on dirt.

    Those wishing to vary their route to this Northern Cape nature reserve in South Africa and get a rewarding perspective of the park can take the road from Vioolsdrift, via Kotzehoop, through spectacular scenery to Eksteenfontein and then on to Sendelingsdrif. If you take this route, please respect the interests of the Kotzehoop farmers whose crops are affected by the dust from speeding vehicles.
