Morning Sun Nature Reserve, Limpopo, South Africa is a Natural Heritage Site. Mashovhela Lodge is the site of the only internationally recognised, electronically catalogued herbarium in Limpopo, classified and collected by Dr Norbert Hahn, son of the owner of the reserve. The Soutpansberg is a centre for biodiversity with almost 600 different trees of which 400 are located in Morning Sun Nature Reserve.

The reserve is also home to around 400 bird species - the Narina Trogon, Peregrine Falcon, Black Eagle, and Purple-crested Lourie to mention a few. There are many mammal species including Leopard, Brown Hyena and the Clawless Otter also baboons, monkeys and bushbabies. Resident wildlife includes 19 antelope species with Kudu and Mountain Reedbuck amongst others which are viewed regularly.

Directions to Mashovhela Lodge:

Morning Sun Nature Reserve is 16km (10 miles) north of Makhado / Louis Trichardt. The Limpopo Province is situated in the far north of South Africa. The reserve can be reached by road and air.

By road

Driving from Gauteng Province (Johannesburg / Pretoria) takes about 5 hours. Drive North on the N1 (Toll road) until you enter Polokwane / Pietersburg. Turn left at the 3rd set of traffic lights - signposted as preferred route for LDV’s to Zimbabwe / Makhado (Nelson Mandela Drive). Pass the Industrial Area for 3.5km (2 miles).

Turn right at the 7th set of traffic lights - signposted as N1 recommended route and airport (Vermikuliet Drive). Drive 4km (2.5 miles) to the T junction. Turn left onto the N1. Pass the airport and follow the signs to Makhado / Louis Trichardt. Drive north for about 100km (62 miles) (Toll road). In Makhado / Louis Trichardt drive straight, passing two 4 Way stops. Continue north passing a traffic circle. Set your odometer to 0 to measure 16km / 10 miles.

Pass Ingwe Ranch (from here there are another 2km / 1.2 miles to travel). Pass the 120kmh speed sign and indicate to turn LEFT. At Mashovhela Lodge (Morning Sun Nature Reserve) turn left and enter our gate. Follow the sand road and signs for 4km (2.5 miles) into the mountain valley, until you end up at the lodge.

By air:

Polokwane is the closest commercial airport, about 120km (75 miles) away. There are scheduled daily flights from Johannesburg. Alternately, private chartered flights can be arranged to airfields in Makhado / Louis Trichardt (30km / 19 miles from the lodge) or Musina (65km / 40 miles away).
