This Garden Route coastal reserve is only accessible by ferry and is situated near the Knysna Lagoon. Featherbed Private Nature Reserve, Western Cape, South Africa is surrounded by lush vegetation and superb views of Knysna. Local attractions, within close proximity include the famous Knysna Heads and the ancient Beachcomber caves.
The Knysna Lagoon is actually an estuary with five fresh water rivers flowing in from the surrounding Outeniqua Mountains to meet the Indian Ocean through the famed Knysna Heads. These grand sandstone cliffs tower above the entrance to the lagoon. Featherbed Private Nature Reserve, Western Cape, South Africa is located on the Western Head.
Visitors to the reserve can see special inhabitants - the endangered Blue Duiker, Knysna Loerie and Knysna Sea Horses. Other wildlife found on the reserve include the Cape Mountain Tortoise, Blue Crane (South Africa's national bird), rare Black African Oyster Catcher, White breasted Cormorant and Bushbuck to name a few.Directions to Featherbed Private Nature Reserve:By Car:
Accessing Knysna from the George direction – West
On entering Knysna, at the first set of traffic lights, take a right turn; 200m further on, take another right turn, passing the Knysna Angling Club on the right. The next building on the right is the Featherbed Ferry Terminus Building from where the Paddle Cruiser and Featherbed Nature Reserve excursions depart. A further 400m on is the Knysna Waterfront Quays from where the John Benn, Rivercat Ferry and the Catamaran Yacht depart.
Accessing Knysna from the Plettenberg Bay direction – East
On entering Knysna, continue past the first set of traffic lights (Kwik Spar / Caltex Garage), continue straight passing the second set of traffic lights (with the hospital on the right and the cemetery on the left). At the next set of traffic lights, veer off left into Waterfront Drive. Continue straight, passing through another set of traffic lights (on Long Street) and at the next set of traffic lights, turn left - the Knysna Quays are ahead for the departures of the John Benn, Rivercat Ferry and the Catamaran Yacht.
For the departures of the Paddle Cruiser and Featherbed Nature Reserve experience, turn right, travelling past the Protea Hotel on the left and the train station on the right and continue a further 400m to the Featherbed Ferry Terminus.
By Air:
Visitors can fly to the George airport. From there, travel a 60km (37 miles) road trip - approximately 1 hour - to Knysna on the N2 in the direction of Port Elizabeth. On arrival in Knysna, follow the road directions as detailed above.
