Karoo National Park near Beaufort West, Western Cape is situated about 500km (311 miles) north of Cape Town, a 1000km (621 miles) south of Johannesburg off the N1 highway in South Africa. This popular nature reserve is a great stopover in the Great Karoo for those journeying through the interior.
This region in the Karoo is characterised by the towering Nuweveld Mountains and rolling plains where a variety of antelope species roam such as Kudu, Eland, and Red Hartebeest. Birdlife is abundant, with the best birding occurring around the campsite. Regional species to look out for include Karoo Eremomela, Namaqua Warbler (Prinia) and Pririt Batis.
Karoo National Park near Beaufort West, Western Cape receives and annual rainfall of about 260 mm. The plains are hot in summer and snow on the Nuweveld Mountains marks the arrival of the winter season. Vegetation in the park falls within the Karoo-Namib bio-geographical region and the Nama Karoo Biome.
All roads within the park are tarred except for the 4x4 trail. There is a basic supplies shop and fuel available in Karoo National Park. The scenic town of Beaufort West is 12km (7 miles) from the park and has all amenities including shops, golf course, bowling green pharmacy, hospital, a, fuel station, and the Chris Barnard Museum.
