Day visitors and overnight guests can relax in the great outdoors, enjoying Borakalalo National Park activities like picnics and great walking trails along the river or dam shoreline. Game drives on the extensive road network are easily negotiated and accessible to all vehicles.

Day visitor facilities at Borakalalo National Park

There is a well-established day visitor area with picnic sites, washing-up facilities and ablutions. Borakalalo National Park activities can be enjoyed from well grassed, shady picnic sites, located close to the water and along the game drives, with barbeque facilities provided.

There is a small shop at the entrance gate, which stocks small supplies of tinned food, eggs, bread, cool drinks and beer. The other two picnic areas are more suitable for birding. They are further away from the main entrance and have limited facilities.

Bird-watching

Borakalalo has abundant birding opportunities. A day trip in summer can easily produce 120 species, which may include rarities such as African Finfoot and Whitebacked Night Heron. A day trip is usually sufficient to cover all the habitats in the park, especially with an early start.

Other specials that can be seen include Yellowbilled Stork, Lappetfaced Vulture, Blackbreasted Snake Eagle, Bronzewinged Courser, Doublebanded Sandgrouse, Meyer's Parrot, Bennett’s Woodpecker, Pied Babbler, Monotonous Lark, Burntnecked Eremomela and Fantailed Flycatcher. There are bird hides on the Sefudi Dam and along the Serolo loop. The most birder friendly campsite is definitely Moretele, where campers can relax in their camp chairs and view the bird activities.

Fishing near Klipvoor Dam

Fishermen are welcome at Borakalalo National Park in South Africa, but they must possess a valid licence and a daily permit, both are available at the park's gate. The licence for fishing at Borakalalo is valid for 24 hours. The licence for permitted waters in North West Province is valid for a year. Fishing is permitted along a lengthy stretch of the Klipvoor Dam shore, but boating and swimming is not allowed because Crocodiles reside in the dam.

Excellent fishing can be enjoyed and fishermen can expect large catches at the right time of year. Kurper (Tilapia), Carp and Barbel are abundant. Makriel, Yellowfish and other species can also be caught.

Self-guided walks

Visitors of Borakalalo National Park in the North West Province of South Africa are encouraged to enjoy the natural environment but to be aware that there are White Rhino, Buffalo, Hippo and Leopard in the park. A beautiful well-wooded area along the Moretele is set aside for self-guided walks. The best areas for walking trails are the Tholo Loop, Audi Loop and the picnic and camping areas which follow the dam shoreline.
